Cheap and cheerful Christmas presents – guest blog

It's officially that time of year. The first door of your advent calendar is open, everybody's seen the Coca-Cola advert, and you're beginning to consider taking drastic measures against that Facebook friend who has been counting down the days until the 25th December via status update since September. I suggest you at least remove them from your news feed, for your own sanity. The town lights have been switched on since the middle of November, and you're beginning to wonder how on earth you're going to tackle the yearly problem of Christmas presents on a minimal budget.

The big office move!

Last week we said goodbye to our old office and moved down the road to our new headquarters.

It was a sad farewell to our old pad which has been our home for nearly 3 years but for an ever expanding business we are moving on to bigger and better things.

The new office offers more space for our growing team to help even more graduates into jobs. We now have two candidate interview rooms so we can help twice as many young people every day.

In the move we managed to keep the essence of our old office and not lose any of the Inspiring charm -we have just spruced it up a bit!

My Internship

Name

Jonny Excell

Age

23

What is your favourite brand and why?

Starbucks. They've taken what is essentially a product that people used to choose on price and built a whole load of value around it. The added value of the in store experience means people now look for a Starbucks when they want their coffee and are happy to pay extra for it. They've made people happy to pay more than £2 for a cup of coffee by creating an environment that covers what their customers need.

Qualifications

BA Sports Marketing and PR.

Why did you do an internship?

It's the best way to build your professional network and get meaningful experience in industry. I'll graduate with fifty people all with the same degree. Having a year of experience already helps you to stand out from the crowd of graduates and helps to hit the ground running in your first job.

What did your internship involve?

My internship included admin and finance tasks involved in marketing plans to leading on smaller projects and working with marketing agencies to deliver them. I could be doing anything from updating budgets to planning and managing an event.

Your favourite part of your internship?

Having the responsibility of actually delivering work. Going from working on hypothetical briefs in modules on my course to being part of a live marketing team was a real eye opener. It's helped me to condense the time I need to make decisions and progress with work. Deadlines in real life are never as far away as the deadlines at uni.

Plus, the parties are excellent...

Any advice for future interns?

Remember that the most important thing for an intern is their character and how they interact with staff from the guys in the post room to the heads of department. Companies won't expect all their interns to be able to deliver first rate work straight away. It's important to keep up a positive attitude and build relationships outside of your immediate team. Being proactive at work is totally different to being proactive at uni. It's one thing to tell your boss in an interview that the only word you know is 'yes' and that you're willing to get stuck into anything asked of you. But try to get ahead of what's being asked of you, go outside your immediate role at work to pick up extra tasks that will make someone else's life a lot easier. They'll remember you helped them out later on. Try to have a point of view on most things. Highlighting something your boss might not have picked up on will get you noticed

Describe yourself in three words

Opinionated, positive and laid back.

University fees lowered to fill degree courses

Figures showed 24 new universities and former polytechnics and one further education college have lowered their tuition fees to below £7,500 a year.

Most elite academic institutions and red-brick universities will still charge the maximum £9,000. Applications to university have fallen 13 per cent before the increase in fees next autumn.
