Government plans £20,000 offer to draw first-class graduates into teaching

Physics, chemistry and maths graduates will also be targeted to boost dwindling numbers of staff in science subjects.

Top graduates are to be offered a £20,000 incentive to take up a career in teaching in order to improve standards in secondary schools, it has emerged.

The plan is due to be announced on Monday in a consultation document by the education secretary, Michael Gove, according to the Daily Telegraph. It will see students with first-class degrees offered a tax-free bursary in a bid to improve teaching standards in secondary schools.

Teachers must think internet-first

Giving everyone digital skills is a key factor in tackling long-term unemployment.

Last week, the CBI pressed the government to apply the same rigour to tackling long-term unemployment as it has shown to reducing the deficit.

Digital skills are now vital for education and employment: we know that you're 25% more likely to get work when you have web skills, and, once in that job, you'll earn 10% more.

Name

Kourtney Shaw

Favourite brand and why

It has to be Coca Cola. Although I am not American I love the Coca Cola brand. I love their recognisable logo, style and colours and the old-school bottle they have perfected to ooze 'coolness'. When they changed the bottle shape I heard sales immediately dropped. I also love the old advertisements and bill boards they used which are meant to symbolise the American culture. Of course, it's officially Christmas time when the Coca Cola advert come on the TV and everyone gets excited seeing that glorious train lit up with the "Holidays are coming" song in the background. It's a brand which a lot of people relate to, a lot of people enjoy and it has remained consistent.

Hobbies

Photography, swimming, dancing and I love going out, socialising and meeting new people.

Qualifications

I am currently studying Philosophy at the University of Birmingham.

Career goal

To work in the world of PR.

What was your internship role?

I am currently an intern at the PRCA for 8 weeks. I have not been assigned a particular role, but I am mainly helping the event manager, with organising events such as the upcoming 2011 PRCA Awards.

Best bit of your internship

I have attended the various meetings and talks put on by the PRCA which are extremely insightful. I have been to a talk on crisis management at the OIympics, Asia and Social Media, Emerging Markets as well as listened to various webinars on different aspects of social media. Attending 'The Debate on the Future of Content' at the British library was a great opportunity I would not have got elsewhere.

Worst bit of your internship

Getting the tube everyday to work during rush hour is not the greatest experience especially in the heat.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Like many students, I am undecided on my chosen career path after university but thins internship has given me a great insight into the world of PR which I feel could be the correct career path for me.

Describe yourself in fewer than three words

Motivated, Outgoing, Inspired.

In the (Ga)-lap-(agos) of luxury – guest blog

By the end of the last blog, I was leaving Honduras, and about to enter the unchartered territory of Nicaragua. We arrived at a place called León, the most volcanic region in Central America. The journey through the border was enjoyable as always, no stamps in the passports to say we'd entered Nicaragua, which we knew would lead to an enjoyable experience when we tried to leave the country at some point. Surprisingly it wasn't a problem, the chaps at both Nicaraguan and Ecuadorian immigration spent a long time flicking through our passports looking for entry stamps, but upon realising that we didn't speak Spanish, gave up and let us both through!
