Blogging your way to a career

Last year, celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton was offered $20m for his website PerezHilton.com. The blog quickly transformed the gossip site guru into one of the most recognised celebrity bloggers and influential people on the web.

Obviously not everybody will bag fame and fortune from their blogs, but they undoubtedly open doors to other opportunities and are a great way to build an online reputation. Blogs can showcase your talents, improve your writing skills and even enhance your chances of finding work and impressing potential employers.

A Brazil-iant way to end - guest blog

Welcome to the final IAtWTB (Inspiring around the world travel blog)! Expect an emotion packed instalment, as four and a half months of frolicking on the other side of the world finally comes to an end.

The last blog concluded with a trip to Iguazu falls, and the Argentinean town of Puerto Iguazu on the border with Brazil. On 12th August we made our final South American border crossing, travelling to the Brazilian town of Foz de Iguacu. Our travels had taught us to always expect at least a five hour wait at a border, so we were overjoyed when we crossed into Brazil with the whole process taking a matter of minutes, the border guard even filled in my immigration forms for me (this border actually won first place in our travel awards category 'best border crossing').

My Internship

Name

Andy Jackson

Age

24

Where is your favourite place and why?

Palawan, Philippines. It is idyllic and largely untainted.

Qualifications

BA English and Communication Studies, MA Political Communication (University of Liverpool).

Why did you do an internship?

It was an opportunity to try out different types of job in order to find out what I enjoy. I thought it was my best chance of gaining some experience.

What does your internship involve?

Media monitoring, and producing communications output including press releases, blogs, newsletters and press kits. My role also involves looking for potential media opportunities and contacting the press.

Your favourite part of your internship?

Writing output and seeing it go up on the website and the variety of tasks.

Any advice for future interns?

Initially I was, perhaps naively, expecting more interesting work than I was given. I thought i'd left my admin days behind. I recognise more now, that most roles involve dull tasks as well as more exciting ones. Don't expect it to all be interesting and glamorous. I didnt anticipate how much working for free would impact both on an emotional and practical level, but regardless I'm grateful for the experience.

Describe yourself in three words

Reflective, thoughtful, determined.

Tuition fees: Labour pledges maximum cap of £6,000

The maximum university fee for students in England would be cut by a third under Labour, Ed Miliband has said.

If the party was in power now it would reduce the cap from £9,000 to £6,000 to ease the debt burden on students, the Labour leader told Andrew Marr.

It would be partly funded by higher interest on student loans for graduates earning more than £65,000 a year.

Mr Miliband - who voted against tuition fee increases last year - denied Tory claims the move amounted to a U-turn.
