Graduates: don't neglect opportunities within SMEs

A recent study conducted by Iconnyx reveals that many university leavers are overlooking roles within small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs), even though gaining employment within an SME can often be a fantastic career opportunity for a graduate.

The survey found that just 3% of the thirty recruitment consultancies asked believed that graduates preferred smaller companies over larger ones.

PMQs: Cameron plans to tackle youth unemployment with work experience placements

During yesterday's Prime Minister's Questions the Prime Minister was questioned about the recent rise in youth unemployment figures. David Cameron accepted the number of young people out of work was "unacceptably high", but defends his Government's efforts to tackle unemployment.

My Internship

Name

Flora Baker

Age

23

Where is your favourite place and why?

San Francisco; I studied there for my year abroad and fell in love with it!

Qualifications

BA in American Literature with Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia.

Why did you do an internship?

I felt it was necessary to gain exposure to a job sector I was considering working within, but didn't yet know if it would suit me. As it happened, I found I really enjoyed working in an office environment, despite initially maintaining that I would never be that type of worker.

What skills did you learn during your internship?

I worked in a sales team for a travel company for three months, so I was learnt to work under pressure to deliver good work fast. I became much more comfortable with working to time constraints, learnt a great deal about the travel industry from a company perspective as opposed to simply travelling myself, and decided it's definitely a career I could see myself in the future.

Your favourite part of your internship?

I really enjoyed feeling like I had true responsibility (I definitely did - this was not a tea making, clock watching internship!) and immediately being part of the team. When I was asked for work and could deliver it promptly without issue, then I really felt like I'd gained a foothold in a field I previously knew nothing about.

Any advice for future interns?

If you want to find out more about a particular career path that you're interested in but don't have much experience in, definitely go for short term internships with a company. Make sure they at least pay travel expenses, and decide beforehand if you're comfortable with not being paid minimum wage. Ultimately, make sure you'll be getting enough out of the experience because you're not getting paid - if you don't like what you're doing, tell someone and make changes.

Describe yourself in three words

Creative, sociable & adventurous.

Universities to pay cash incentives to attract students

Universities will pay cash incentives of up to £3,000 to bright sixth formers in an "arms race" for high-quality students.

Institutions across the country, including City University London, and Leicester, Surrey and Northumbria universities, are introducing payments to attract candidates with the best exam grades.
