Glistening path of opportunity – guest blog

Guest blog by Zara Kenton, creator of Designer District.

Zara Kenton, creator of Designer District, has kindly written a guest blog for us. An interesting account of the struggle some interns face to make headway in the fashion industry, it is worth pointing out none of the internships she completed were found through Inspiring Interns, but they serve as a good warning for people looking to get into this highly competitive industry that there are some companies who act unscrupulously when hiring interns.

Ten interview mistakes

We have been speaking to some employers who take on graduates about interview tips & techniques. Instead of putting this into the standard interview tips blog that we have all read before, we have compiled the following list of things you shouldn't do. Everyone knows you should do some research and arrive on time, but what else?

My Internship

Name

Tiffany Naylor

Age

21

Where is your favourite place and why?

Fagerstrand beach in Norway (south of Oslo). I visited it in February when the sea was iced over, the sun was shining and I was stood in 2 foot deep snow. Simply beautiful!

Qualifications

Currently in my third year of BA (Hons) Journalism at University College Falmouth.

Why did you do an internship?

I believe internships are essential for gaining advice from experts first-hand, putting skills learnt from my course into place and for making contacts. I chose the BBC magazine Homes & Antiques firstly because of being able to make my CV stand out and secondly because I have a fetish for looking at other people's homes (not as creepy as it sounds, I promise).

What does your internship involve?

My internships enabled me to write for the website and go to photo shoots in London.

Your favourite part of your internship?

Meeting people who had changed their ambitions into a paid career. It showed me that it is possible and that it doesn't require superpowers but just commitment and passion.

Any advice for future interns?

Be confident - or at least pretend! Remember that you have something unique to offer and if you've gained a placement then they chose you for a reason.

Do your homework - have an understanding on how the company works and what your role with them will entail. Be politely pushy - start the internship with a goal and keep pushing for that.

Describe yourself in three words

Ambitious, friendly, restless.

Student protesters take to the streets in their thousands

Students have hit London's streets in their thousands today to protest against tuition fees and cuts in spending on education.

It is estimated that 10,000 students are attending the march, which began at 12pm today, following government cuts and the three-fold hike in tuition fees.

Protesters are also opposed to proposed plans to allow private providers to give degrees for the first time.
