Glistening path of opportunity – guest blog

Guest blog by Zara Kenton, creator of Designer District.

Zara Kenton, creator of Designer District, has kindly written a guest blog for us. An interesting account of the struggle some interns face to make headway in the fashion industry, it is worth pointing out none of the internships she completed were found through Inspiring Interns, but they serve as a good warning for people looking to get into this highly competitive industry that there are some companies who act unscrupulously when hiring interns.

A room of one's own: coping with moving back home post-university – guest blog

For most graduates, moving back home feels less like a convenient arrangement and more like a living nightmare. Gone are the days of cooking pizza in the early hours, having last minute house parties, and leaving cups around the house to grow impressive mould that looks like what can only be described as a national forest.

But are these changes such a bad thing?

My Internship

Name

Sara Royle

Age

20

What is your favourite brand and why?

Picking a favourite is tricky, but I'm a big fan of Innocent. Entrepreneurs with a moral conscience, or just very clever marketing. Either way, their smoothies are delicious.

Qualifications

Currently in my third year of my English degree.

Why did you do an internship?

I wanted an insight into what working life is going to be like. I'm also very aware that to improve my chances at getting future internships and jobs at larger companies, that prior relevant experience is essential.

What skills did you learn during your internship?

Time management skills were essential! I was writing large amounts of copy in a very short space of time. I learnt how to meet the correct criteria, and how to work quickly under pressure. I also learnt a lot about working online, running my own website, and just how important a good cup of coffee is on a Thursday afternoon.

Your favourite part of your internship?

Not to sound like too much of a sycophant, but I loved working with the people that I was working with. We got on ridiculously well, and I always looked forward to going into work. Other than that, setting up my own website was a fantastic opportunity and I really enjoyed the process.

Any advice for future interns?

Apply to as many places as possible and don't limit yourself to well known companies. Ask as many questions as possible; you're there to learn! Ensure that you're getting something out of the internship, including a reference.

Describe yourself in three words

Passionate, inquisitive and motivated.

Nick Clegg: one million unemployed young people 'must not be ignored'

More than a million young people are unemployed, figures out today are expected to show.

Youth unemployment reached 991,000 last month, the highest figure since comparable records began in 1992, and experts believe it is inevitable that the politically-sensitive one million mark will be breached today.
