Graduate News

Graduates are working in low-skill jobs

University leavers are increasingly taking menial jobs that do not require a degree, it was reported today.

New statistics published by the Association of Accounting Technicians reveals that 40% of last year's graduates are 'underemployed' in lower-skilled jobs six months after leaving university.

With high competition for graduate jobs the alternative choice for university leavers is to find a graduate internship. Rather than taking a menial, low-skilled job that the candidate is over qualified for, an internship can bridge the gap between university and a graduate job. A good graduate internship can provide valuable work experience, key skills and the potential to build up a network of contacts.

Do you take whatever you can to start earning money, whether this is a supermarket job or call centre with no career prospects? Or do you gain experience and contacts through a graduate internship, progressing to a full-time permanent role?

Students warn of cut-price places 'flea market'

Student leaders have warned that cut-price fees to fill empty university places could turn the admissions process into a "flea market".

It follows reports Universities Minister David Willetts had suggested some universities could reduce tuition fees in clearing.

The Office for Fair Access has warned against "unfair" late discounts.

The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills says any discount would have to be given to all students.

The department said if any last-minute tuition fee reduction were offered in clearing, it would also have to be retrospectively applied to all students with a place on the same course, to avoid a financial incentive to delay applications.

David Willetts defends £28,000 uni places in wake of 'breeding' row

David Willetts has defended plans to allow universities to charge some students up to £28,000 a year, after unions claimed the move will turn back the clock to when 'breeding not brains' mattered.

Universities minister Willetts confirmed proposals to let English universities charge some British applicants the same fees as overseas students from outside the EU were being considered.

Foreign students get no government subsidy, with the best universities charging up to £12,000 a year for arts subjects, £18,000 for the sciences and £28,000 for medicine.

UCU general secretary Sally Hunt said: 'Far from increasing social mobility, it is hard to see how this is anything other than the government entrenching privilege for the wealthy in response to its failing university fees policy.

'We risk turning the clock back to a time when breeding rather than brains were required to get on in life.' Aaron Porter, president of the National Union of Students, said it created a two-tier system that allowed 'the richest, less able applicants a second bite at the university cherry'.

Lucha Libre & Cuba Libres… Mexico City & Belize – Guest Blog

Welcome to the third instalment of my travels and crikey there is a lot to say.

The heat was pretty intense when we reached DF (colloquial abbreviation for Mexico City), exacerbated by our huge bags which had been made all the heavier by the numerous 'I love NY' T-shirts we'd bought.

We shared our dorm with a 60 year old Californian hippy who had come to Mexico City for a month to give his Fijian boyfriend some space at home. After pleasantries with him were finished we started exploring. Our first meal was from a 'street vendor' or a 'filthy street vendor' as they soon became known. In hindsight it was probably a bit unfair calling them filthy, as the tacos were delicious and the cockroaches and flies surrounding their stalls helped keep you on your toes....
