Graduates call for more employability training at universities

Universities must teach better employability skills in course structures to help students develop key workplace competencies, according to research published today by the CBI and the National Union of Students (NUS).

The survey of 2,614 students found that more than half (57%) wanted universities to do more to help them get to grips with employability skills, such as teamworking, customer awareness and self-management, and two-thirds (66%) would like more support in developing these skills.

Can universities help cultivate a culture of fair internships?

Like other commentators, I find it difficult to keep up with the fast changing policy shifts from Whitehall; while many of the ideas appear to start from good intentions, officials appear unable to think more than one step ahead – with little assessment of how students, staff, managers, parents or employers might react.

In an overheated environment, it is worth stepping back from the noise and considering the underlying signal of what is happening with networking and internships and the effect and importance of these for today's students.

Qualifications

Last year of studies in the Bachelor of Commerce Program at Queen's School of Business, Canada.

Career goal

To work in Marketing in sports/entertainment.

What was your internship role?

I was the former Assistant to the Director of Marketing of the Kingston Frontenac Hockey Club in Canada. The Kingston Frontenacs are part of the Ontario Hockey League, a professional league where players are eventually drafted to the National Hockey League (NHL).

Best bit of your internship

The best part about the internship was getting the chance to see what goes on behind-the-scenes during game days. From meeting VIPs, to making sure that media had the right passes, to working with the team mascot and interacting with the audience, these were all really unique experiences. I was able to assist with rink board ad layout for the first home game of the regular season, and once, had to step in at the last minute as the in-arena TV announcer.

Worst bit of your internship

The worst bit about the internship was during the slower days, when there were no games or public events going on. I like working in fast-paced, high-energy situations so I don't like it when there is not enough work to do.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Hard to say, I'm willing to relocate for work so I'll go where the job market dictates...but only after I finish my undergraduate degree!

Describe yourself in fewer than three words

Spontaneous and talkative.

Meet the Team - Sam Bloom

We are giving you the chance to invade Inspiring HQ and meet the people behind the scenes.

The idea is to interview each member of the Inspiring team to give you a little bit of a sneak peek of what goes on between the graduate internships and the roof-top parties.  We will be digging the dirt on each of the team members so you can learn more about their roles, their ambitions and their inspirations.
