Half of universities predict student numbers will fall

More than half of England's universities expect to be teaching fewer undergraduates next year when tuition fees rise to up to £9,000 per year, a report has revealed.

Its analysis shows 56 universities are anticipating a drop in the number of full-time undergraduates they take from the UK or the European Union next year. On average, universities expect a 2% fall, but one institution predicts a 20% drop and five others foresee decreases of more than 10%.

More universities to be created under Coalition plan

Specialist colleges with just 1,000 students will be allowed to call themselves universities for the first time under Government reforms being published today.

More than a dozen small-scale institutions – often specialising in media, the arts, education or agriculture – could win the right to full university status as soon as next year, it is revealed.

My Internship

Name

Emily Moore

Age

22

Where is your favourite place and why?

Cornwall, namely Hawkers Cove on the North Cornish coast. Many family holidays spent there and lots of happy memories. Alternatively, Oxford Street, for obvious shopaholic reasons!

Qualifications

BSc, Cert DMP, MSc Marketing.

Why did you do an internship?

I undertook an internship to gain experience in a professional environment, develop my business acumen and turn learnt academic theory into practice. Not only this, but by completing an internship, my dedication to a career in marketing has been proven and has significantly improved my chances of graduate employment in a strained economic climate.

What does your internship involve?

The development and maintenance of a customer database, comprising over 400 retailers and hospitality providers, via in-depth market research. Selling company products to small retail chains and managing ongoing customer relationships. Assisting in the rebranding of the company and redesigning the website.

Your favourite part of your internship?

Having the opportunity to work alongside and learn from some very interesting and knowledgeable individuals.

Any advice for future interns?

Don't take the first internship offered to you if it is not what you are looking for. Yes, you need experience, but you need relevant experience to the career you are striving for. Set up a LinkedIn account so you can begin connecting and networking with professionals in your chosen field. Read professional magazines relevant to your industry or chosen sector. Keep on top of current developments including world news..

Describe yourself in three words

Ambitious, hard-working, self-motivated.

Inspiring Interns celebrate placing their 1000th intern

Fortunately, one start-up company in London is helping buck this trend. Inspiring Interns are celebrating creating 1000 graduate internships since being founded in January 2009, with over 600 of these leading to new, permanent graduate jobs.
