It's not all doom and gloom for grads

The average number of graduates applying to each vacancy has risen to 83 – up from 31 just three years ago, it was reported yesterday.

The headline figure from the bi-annual Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) report makes grim reading for those poised to leave university. The number of CVs sent in for each vacancy is now the highest on record so job prospects look slim for the class of 2011. However, it's not all doom and gloom for university leavers.

University reforms: 'dead-end' courses to be named and shamed

Higher education white paper promises to give students more power to ensure they get their money's worth, but Labour brands reforms a 'complete shambles'.

My Internship

Name

Lizzie Apichella

Age

24

Favourite brand and why

Currently TOMS because they are so good for my feet and for every pair of TOMS purchased, a pair of new shoes is given to a child in need.

Hobbies

Hiking, reading, cooking & talking if that is a hobby.

Qualifications

BA English and American Literature.

Career goal

To work in the arts, something to do with books and people!

What was your internship role?

Working with the publicity and marketing manager at Honno Press, meeting authors, setting up events and putting Honno on Facebook. I coordinated the setting-up of the new Honno Classics Book Club which involved getting to grips with planning its structure, writing website content and deciding on design, arranging paper advertising and social media promotion.

Best bit of your internship

Working with a team of people who really care about the books they publish.

Worst bit of your internship

Getting drenched on the way there one day and having to sit in wet clothes all morning!

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

Loving my work in London and in a position where I can help interns get a head-start.

Describe yourself in fewer than three words

Focused and exuberant.

How to make the most of an internship – guest blog

Amy Sillince, self proclaimed worka-shopa-holic and fashion promotion student, gives her views on how to make the most of an internship with a larger corporation and earning yourself a graduate job.

When thinking about what you want to get out of work experience, the clue is right there in the name – experience. Above anything else when I am looking for a work placement, I want to know that I'm really going to gain something from the company; whether its skills, knowledge, contacts or another opportunity elsewhere.
